Best for: collectors and estate owners who want an integrated team of interior designers, interior architects and furniture designers on a single project.

Founded by Nicole Hollis in 2002 and based on Brannan Street in SoMa, NICOLEHOLLIS is the most decorated firm in the city. It has appeared on the Architectural Digest AD100 every year from 2021 through 2026, on the Elle Decor A-List in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026 and on the 1stDibs 50, and Hollis was named ASID Designer of the Year in 2023. The studio's stated aim is "timeless interiors that elevate the human spirit," and its work is impeccably detailed, quiet and material-led, with inspiration drawn from the natural world.

The practice is structured as a collective of interior designers, interior architects and furniture designers, which is why it can take on ground-up estates and hospitality projects alike. Residential work accounts for most of the studio's output, with hospitality (Kona Village Resort, 1 Hotel San Francisco) making up the balance. The Bay Area portfolio runs from Presidio Heights, Russian Hill and Broadway residences to Atherton and Rosewood Sand Hill on the Peninsula and Alexander Valley in wine country. A Rizzoli monograph, Artistry of Home, was published in 2024.

Client reviews are few because the firm works almost entirely by referral; its Houzz profile shows a 5.0 rating from a handful of reviews. Expect a large team, a long timeline and a project scale to match.

New constructionWhole-home renovationFurnishingCustom cabinetry90-min consultation

Best for: homeowners who want a boutique, principal-led studio to run a whole-home project end to end, with transparent pricing and a warm, livable modern result.

Saga Interiors is the boutique studio of Mahsa Afsharpour, who founded it in 2016 after more than fifteen years in corporate project management. That training shows in a process that is unusually clear for a design firm: a scope conversation and realistic budget first, then a detailed proposal with a committed timeline, drawings and 3D renderings, specification sheets that show costs and lead times, procurement, contractor coordination and finally installation and styling. The firm publishes its numbers rather than hiding them: design fees start at $10,000, larger whole-home projects average $20 to $25 per square foot, and renovation scopes typically begin around $150,000.

The design language is what Afsharpour calls warm modern: elevated, inviting and never trend-chasing, with clean lines balanced by rich textures, layered lighting and sculptural pieces. It draws on her Persian heritage, a Swedish upbringing and a love of California living, and the firm deliberately avoids repeating one signature look from house to house. Services cover new-build construction and remodels, full gut renovations, custom kitchen and bath cabinetry, furniture, lighting and accessory curation, purchasing, project management and site visits, with a two-room minimum on furnishing-only work. On new construction the studio prefers to be involved as early as possible, working alongside the architect, contractor and structural engineer.

In the city, Saga furnished a 2,575-square-foot, three-bedroom penthouse residence at 181 Fremont that MyDomaine featured in 2021. On the Peninsula its work includes Refined Comfort, a family home in Hillsborough, and Casa Renacimiento, the renovation and furnishing of a 1931 Spanish Revival home in San Mateo. The firm is listed in the Architectural Digest AD PRO Directory and has been quoted or featured by Apartment Therapy, The Spruce and The Everygirl. Its studio is on the Peninsula in the Millbrae and Burlingame area, roughly twenty minutes from downtown, and it serves San Francisco and San Mateo County.

Best for: art collectors and owners of significant houses who want rooms built from substance rather than style, mixing 18th-century, mid-century French and contemporary pieces.

Steven Volpe established his practice in San Francisco in 1990 after several years in Paris and now works from a historic office at 727 Sansome Street in Jackson Square under the name Studio Volpe. He is a fixture on the AD100, including the 2025 and 2026 lists, and Rizzoli published his monograph Steven Volpe: Rooms in 2021. The studio's position is that true, original style can only emerge from substance, and that good rooms transcend the labels of modern and traditional.

The firm offers integrated design of architecture, landscape, furniture and art, with the curation of fine and decorative art, vintage and contemporary, as a core service. Project types run from historic estates to glass-and-steel penthouses and country retreats, for clients that include art collectors and senior figures in technology, in San Francisco, Atherton, the Napa Valley, New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris. Volpe is essentially a modernist with a less-is-more sensibility, and he sits on the board of the Chinati Foundation in Marfa.

This is not a firm with a public review footprint; it is referral-driven and best approached with an estate-scale brief.

Best for: traditional and classically detailed homes that want European-influenced rooms at a Californian scale, from a firm with four decades of pedigree.

Suzanne Tucker and Timothy Marks founded Tucker & Marks in 1986 after acquiring the practice of the legendary Michael Taylor, under whom Tucker trained. From its Maiden Lane studio the firm delivers comprehensive interior design and decorating for high-end residences, with in-house space planning, drafting, production and purchasing departments and a deep bench in custom furniture, upholstery and textiles, lighting, finishes and the sourcing of antiques and art.

Tucker describes the look as "European in look but West Coast in scale": timeless, highly personalized homes that balance European influence with a Californian sense of ease. Recognition is extensive. The firm was repeatedly named to the AD100 between 2007 and 2014, holds Luxe Gold List placements in 2016, 2022 and 2023, and Tucker received the Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York School of Interior Design in 2023 and the ICAA Julia Morgan Award in 2016. Three monographs have been published with Monacelli, most recently Extraordinary Interiors in 2022.

Bay Area projects include Pacific Heights residences, a San Francisco penthouse, a Georgian residence on the Peninsula, Carmel Valley estates and a Napa cottage, alongside work in Bel Air, New York, Montana and Hawaii.

Best for: warm California-modern estates where the designer joins the architect and builder from day one.

Jennifer Jones founded Niche Interiors in 2007; she is an Associate ASID member, a LEED Accredited Professional and a founding member of the Good Future Design Alliance. The firm specializes in new construction and full-scale, whole-home renovations, with custom furniture made by Bay Area fabricators, art curation and project management through installation. Its aesthetic is warm California modernism, bespoke and layered, calibrated to the house and the land rather than imposed.

Niche won a Luxe RED Award in 2025 for a modern San Francisco Victorian designed with William Duff Architects, has twice made the Luxe Gold List and holds 24 Houzz awards, including Best of Houzz Design in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Its 63 Houzz reviews average a perfect 5.0. The studio is candid about scale: typical furnishing budgets start around $1 million, remodels run 12 to 18 months and custom builds two to four years. Recent work includes an 8,000-square-foot ground-up home in Hillsborough, completed in 2026.

From a Sacramento Street studio in Presidio Heights, her team of about 17 designers, interior architectural designers and project managers delivers full-service work for high-end residential clients: new-construction interiors, extensive renovations, custom millwork, fixtures and finishes, and decoration.

The signature is personalized interiors that combine classic detailing with the restraint of modern design, often with vintage pieces mixed in so a new home feels collected. City projects include an extensive interior and exterior renovation of a historic San Francisco home, a sensitive 7,000-square-foot renovation in Presidio Heights, and houses in Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, Nob Hill and Alamo Square; on the Peninsula the firm has completed six Hillsborough projects plus homes in Atherton and Los Altos Hills. Best for: owners who want theatre: exuberant, story-driven houses from the designer behind The Battery and the Huntington Hotel.

Ken Fulk launched his firm in San Francisco's Mission District in the late 1990s and runs it from the Magic Factory, a 1908 former leather factory on 7th Street in SoMa, with further offices in New York and Los Angeles and a team of around 100. The studio works across private homes and compounds, hotels, restaurants and members' clubs, events and branding, producing what it calls "seemingly effortless works of exuberance."

In the city Fulk's residential work includes Birch Castle, a five-story home, and the four-year renovation of a roughly 9,000-square-foot 1912 Ernest Coxhead house in Presidio Heights published by Elle Decor; on the Peninsula and in wine country the portfolio lists Hummingbird Hill and The Mill in Woodside, Durham Ranch in St. Helena and compounds in Sonoma, Glen Ellen and Healdsburg. Hospitality credits include The Battery, Leo's Oyster Bar, Tosca Cafe and the interiors of the Huntington Hotel on Nob Hill, which reopened in 2026. Best for: owners of Georgian, Edwardian, Deco and Arts and Crafts houses who want rooms that read like artworks and an art collection built alongside them.

Lauren Geremia trained as a painter at RISD and founded her studio in 2006; it now operates from the Mission District with around ten designers. Early on the firm became known for Dropbox's China Basin headquarters and Instagram's offices, but its current work is residential interior design and art consultancy. Geremia Design deliberately has no singular aesthetic; the studio says art is at the heart of every project and aims to craft spaces that are as close to artworks as it is possible to be.

The studio restores and extends period homes, and its recent portfolio includes a 1940 Tudor in Belvedere featured by the 1stDibs 50, a 1920s San Francisco penthouse restoration, a Noe Valley Victorian whose square footage was doubled, a Bay Area Eichler and a Lake Tahoe ski house. Geremia was named to the AD100 in 2024 and to the 1stDibs 50 in 2024, 2025 and 2026, made the Luxe Gold List in 2019, and was an AD "Ones to Watch" and Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree earlier in her career. Best for: clients who want fearless color and a home that feels collected and narrative, backed by the largest verified review base on this list.

Noz Nozawa, a University of Pennsylvania economics graduate and former Fortune 100 brand marketer, established Noz Design in 2014. The firm's full-service residential practice explicitly covers new-build homes, gut and cosmetic renovations and furnishings-only projects, with a parallel commercial practice for independently owned restaurants, retail and hospitality. Houzz lists typical projects from $700,000 to $10 million, and its 68 reviews there average 5.0.

Nozawa's philosophy is that the best design feels like coming home to yourself; Sunset dubbed her the queen of colorful interiors. Projects include new-build homes in Noe Valley and Cole Valley, the Japanese Victorian, the Mira penthouse, a Nob Hill jewel box and restaurants such as Hilda and Jesse in North Beach. She has been named to the 1stDibs 50 in 2023, 2025 and 2026 and the Luxe Gold List in 2024 and 2026, was an Architectural Digest New American Voices and House Beautiful Next Wave honoree in 2020, and San Francisco Magazine named Noz Design its Best Interior Design Firm for 2026.

Best for: homeowners who want classic architecture inside and expressive color, pattern and contrast on top of it.

Jeff Schlarb's studio on Sacramento Street in Presidio Heights describes its work as "classic design, choreographed by imagination": timeless architectural foundations paired with art, color, texture and unexpected contrast. Schlarb calls it cleaned-up maximalism and says he is period-agnostic. The sixteen-person team offers new-construction interior design, full-scale renovations developed with architects and builders, kitchen and bath design with custom cabinetry and millwork, and furnishing and decorative layering, plus occasional hospitality work.

Schlarb co-founded his first studio in 2002 and has more than two decades of experience. The portfolio is dense with San Francisco neighborhoods, including a 1914 Tudor Revival renovation in Presidio Heights and homes in Pacific Heights, Russian Hill, the Marina, Telegraph Hill and Nob Hill, with Peninsula projects in Hillsborough and Atherton and wine-country houses in Sonoma and Healdsburg. Best for: clients who want to hand over the keys and return to a finished, fully provisioned home.

Brittany Giannone founded ABD STUDIO, short for "authenticity by design," in 2014; it works from Polk Street in Russian Hill and takes projects nationwide. The studio is organized around two offerings. Its ground-up build and renovation services cover 2D CAD, 3D renderings, millwork, lighting specification, custom cabinetry and finish, fixture and appliance selection. Its interior decor services run from space planning and custom furniture to window treatments, art placement and complete home provisioning for a true turnkey result, with project management of budget, schedule, purchasing and installation throughout.

The design philosophy fuses scale and composition to unite sophisticated luxury with effortless ease; Giannone says she has no interest in recreating the same designs over and over. Notable work includes the restoration of a 1906 Edwardian brick house in Pacific Heights with architect Ken Linsteadt, residences in Presidio Heights, Laurel Heights and Cow Hollow, a Sonoma getaway and a Tribeca loft featured by Architectural Digest. ABD was a first-year honoree of the 1stDibs 50 in 2022 and has been published in Vogue Living, Luxe, California Homes and San Francisco Magazine.

How we ranked San Francisco's interior designers

This is an independent editorial ranking. We started with the firms most often named in San Francisco's luxury residential market, then compared each on the criteria below using the firm's own website, its Houzz and Yelp profiles and published press, all reviewed in October 2026. Where a rating or award could not be verified, we left it out.

Full-property capabilityCan the firm run a whole house, from ground-up new construction or a gut renovation through furnishing and styling, rather than decorating a finished one?
Portfolio depthDocumented San Francisco and Bay Area projects, including the Peninsula and wine country, with named architects and builders.
RecognitionAD100, Elle Decor A-List, Luxe Gold List, 1stDibs 50, ASID honors, Best of Houzz and major editorial features.
Client reviewsRatings and counts on Houzz and Yelp as checked in October 2026. Many top firms work purely by referral and have few public reviews.
TransparencyHow clearly the firm states its process, fees, markups and typical project minimums before you sign.
Fit for the cityExperience with Victorians and Edwardians, high-rise residences and the hillside new builds that define San Francisco's housing stock.

A note on choosing. The best fit for you will depend on your style, your budget and the scale of the project. An AD100 studio built for 15,000-square-foot estates is not necessarily the right partner for a Noe Valley renovation, and a nimble boutique firm may not be staffed for a hospitality-scale compound. Shortlist two or three firms whose published work resembles your house, ask each how it structures fees and who you will work with day to day, and speak to all of them before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the best interior designers in San Francisco?

In this independent ranking, NICOLEHOLLIS, Saga Interiors and Studio Volpe lead a field of 15 San Francisco luxury firms, followed by Tucker & Marks and Niche Interiors. Each was assessed on full-property capability, new-construction and renovation experience, recognition and client reviews. The best fit for you depends on your style and goals, so speak with more than one firm.

How much do luxury interior designers in San Francisco charge?

Published figures vary widely. Saga Interiors lists design fees from $10,000 and renovation scopes typically from $150,000. FormAndField's intake form starts at a $400,000 total project investment. Heather Hilliard Design lists typical projects from $500,000, Niche Interiors from $500,000 to $2 million, and Geremia Design and Noz Design list ranges running to $10 million. Ask every firm for its fee structure, markups and minimums in writing.

Which San Francisco interior designers work on new construction?

Firms on this list that explicitly offer new-construction or ground-up interior design include Saga Interiors, Niche Interiors, Heather Hilliard Design, Noz Design, Jeff Schlarb Design Studio, ABD STUDIO, FormAndField and Maquette Interior Design. Studio Volpe, NICOLEHOLLIS and ODADA integrate interior architecture into estate-scale projects. Use the Services filter above to narrow the list.

What is the difference between an AD100 firm and a Best of Houzz firm?

The AD100 is Architectural Digest's annual editorial list of leading architects and designers worldwide; the Elle Decor A-List and 1stDibs 50 are similar editorial honors. Best of Houzz awards are based on client reviews and portfolio engagement on the Houzz platform, so they tend to favor firms with many smaller projects and a public review history. Both signal quality in different ways.

Do these firms work outside San Francisco?

Yes. Nearly all of them work on the Peninsula (Hillsborough, Atherton, Woodside), in Marin and in the Napa and Sonoma valleys, and several, including NICOLEHOLLIS, Studio Volpe, Tucker & Marks, Ken Fulk, Kendall Wilkinson Design and ABD STUDIO, take projects nationally.

How was this ranking produced?

We compared each firm on full-property and new-construction capability, San Francisco and Bay Area portfolio depth, recognition such as the AD100, Elle Decor A-List, Luxe Gold List and 1stDibs 50, verified client reviews on Houzz and Yelp, and transparency about process and pricing. Sources were firm websites, Houzz and Yelp profiles and published press, reviewed in October 2026.
